Summaryというか抜粋というか:

According to an ESL teacher named Ann E. Oliveri, second language acquisition can be defined as learning continuum because the new language learner "progresses from no knowledge of the new language to a level of competency closely resembling that of a native speaker."

Proponents of SLA theories identify five distinct stages as follows:

(Each stage lasts certain period of time ranging from several hours to up to 10 years.)

Stage 1. Silent/receptive (learners are totally silent)

Stage 2. Early production (acquire vocabulary of up to 1,000 words, speak some words and form short phrase, may not be grammatically correct)

Stage 3. Speech emergence (acquire vocab. of up to 3,000 words, communicate by putting the words in short phrases, sentences, and question, may not be grammatically correst, important stage during which gain greater comprehension and begin reading and writing)

Stage 4. Intermediate fluency (vocab. as many as 6,000 words, can communicate in writing and speech using more complex sentences, begin thinking in their second language)

Stage 5. Continued language development/advanced fluency (at least two years to reach this stage, and then up to 10 years to achieve full mastery of the L2 in all its complexties and nuances)

Learners need ongoing opportunities to engage in discussions and express themselves in their new language, in order to fluency in it.

The key to learning a new language and developing proficiency in speaking and writing that language is consistency and practice.
