Essay: Personal Recommendation of Autumn Foliage in Japan

Nikko and Nasu (located in northern side of my hometown Tochigi prefecture) are known for their beautiful autumn foliage, but in my personal opinion, now their foliage are not as beautiful as they were many years ago.

Instead of those spots, I recommend going to Kyoto prefecture, 600km away from Tochigi. As I lived in Osaka, neighborhood of Kyoto, for three years, I often visited Kyoto. There are so many spectacular spots to visit in all seasons, but I especially like autumn scenery there.

Many of Kyoto's temples and shrines come ablaze with the radiant red and yellow of autumn maple leaves. Among many spots, I recommend Ryoanji in Arashiyama on the west side of Kyoto. Colorful leaves surround the large pond in the garden with the pond reflecting the elegant foliage like a mirror.

In an average year, the foliage season in Kyoto lasts from 15 October to 15 December, with a peak around 15 November. One of the best points of autumn foliage is, unlike cherry blossoms, the peak lasts up to two month.

Although there may be other popular foliage destinations in Kyoto and as well as in Japan, I give an example where I've been in person.
